Element cycles: how they interact
The five elements aren't isolated — they flow in two cycles. The generating cycle (상생): Wood feeds Fire → Fire creates Earth (ash) → Earth yields Metal → Metal collects Water → Water nourishes Wood. The controlling cycle (상극): Wood breaks Earth → Earth dams Water → Water quenches Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal cuts Wood. A Saju reader uses these cycles to assess which elements are balanced, which are in conflict, and what energies your life might naturally call in.
Five elements vs. Western personality models
Where the Big Five measures five psychological traits as spectrums, the five elements describe five energetic qualities — closer to archetypes than scores. They're not mutually exclusive; you carry all five to some degree. A Saju reading finds which dominate and which are lacking, then interprets what that balance means for your personality and life timing. Many people find the element balance explains aspects of themselves that Western models miss.
