Frequently Asked Questions
What is empathy, exactly? +
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. Psychologists distinguish three types: Cognitive empathy (understanding what others think and feel), Affective empathy (actually feeling what they feel), and Compassionate empathy (being moved to help). Most people score differently on each.
What is a "high empath"? +
A high empath scores significantly above average on affective (emotional) empathy — they absorb others' emotions deeply, sometimes involuntarily. This comes with strengths (deep connections, high sensitivity to others' needs) and challenges (emotional exhaustion, difficulty setting boundaries).
Is low empathy the same as being a narcissist or sociopath? +
No. Low empathy on a test simply means you tend to engage less emotionally with others' feelings. Many people score low because they prefer rational analysis over emotional resonance — it does not imply any personality disorder. Narcissistic personality disorder involves a specific cluster of traits beyond empathy scores.
Can empathy be developed? +
Yes. Research shows empathy can be trained — through perspective-taking exercises, mindfulness, exposure to diverse life experiences, and therapy. High cognitive empathy in particular is highly learnable; affective empathy is more trait-like but still trainable.
Is empathy the same as emotional intelligence (EQ)? +
No — EQ is broader. Emotional intelligence includes empathy but also self-awareness, emotional regulation, motivation, and social skills. Empathy is one important component of EQ. You can have high empathy but low emotional regulation (feeling everyone else's emotions and being overwhelmed by them).
