Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Enneagram? +
The Enneagram is a personality system that describes nine interconnected types, each defined by a core motivation (what you most deeply desire) and a core fear (what you most deeply want to avoid). Unlike MBTI which describes behavioral patterns, the Enneagram focuses on underlying drives.
How is the Enneagram different from MBTI? +
MBTI describes HOW you think and interact. The Enneagram describes WHY — the core fear and desire driving your behavior. Many people find that their Enneagram type explains the emotional pattern behind their MBTI preferences.
What is a "wing"? +
Your wing is the neighboring type (one number above or below yours) that blends into your type. A Type 4, for example, can be a 4w3 (more achievement-oriented) or a 4w5 (more intellectual and withdrawn). Most people have one dominant wing.
What does integration and disintegration mean? +
Each type has a "stress path" (disintegration — you take on the unhealthy traits of another type when stressed) and a "growth path" (integration — you take on healthy traits of another type when growing). Understanding these dynamics is one of the most useful parts of the Enneagram.
Is the Enneagram scientifically validated? +
The Enneagram has less empirical research behind it than the Big Five, but many therapists and coaches find it clinically useful, especially for understanding emotional patterns and relationship dynamics. Use it as a lens for self-reflection, not a diagnostic tool.
