What Is the Enneagram? 9 Types Explained

The Enneagram is a personality system with 9 types — each defined by a core motivation (what you most want) and a core fear (what you most avoid). It goes deeper than MBTI by asking why you do what you do, not just how.

Core motivation vs. behavior

Two Type 3s can look very different on the surface — one is a corporate executive, another is a social media influencer. What they share is the same core drive: to be seen as successful and valued. The Enneagram identifies the engine underneath the behavior, which is why it's so useful for personal growth. Once you know your type, you can catch yourself acting from fear rather than health, and choose differently.

Enneagram and the KAEHAE approach

At KAEHAE LAB, Enneagram sits alongside MBTI, the Big Five and Korean Saju as one of the languages you can use to read yourself. Where Saju reads the energy you were born with, the Enneagram reads the emotional pattern that formed around it. Together they give a layered, multi-perspective view of who you are.

Enneagram FAQ

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram is a personality system that identifies 9 types, each defined by a core motivation (what you most deeply want) and a core fear (what you most want to avoid). Unlike MBTI which focuses on cognitive style, the Enneagram goes deeper into the emotional drives and defense mechanisms that shape your behavior.

How is Enneagram different from MBTI?

MBTI describes HOW you process information and relate to the world (cognitive preferences). The Enneagram describes WHY you do what you do — your deepest motivation and core fear. Both are useful, and many people find combining them gives the most complete picture. Your MBTI type describes your cognitive style; your Enneagram type describes your emotional driver.

What are wings in the Enneagram?

Your "wing" is the adjacent type that flavors your core type. Every type has two possible wings (the types on either side on the Enneagram circle). For example, Type 4 can have a 3 wing (4w3) or a 5 wing (4w5). Your wing adds nuance — a 4w3 is more achievement-focused than a 4w5, who is more withdrawn and intellectual.

Can my Enneagram type change?

Your core type is generally stable — it reflects your deepest pattern of motivation, not your current mood or life phase. However, growth work can shift how your type expresses itself dramatically. A healthy Type 8 looks very different from an unhealthy Type 8, even though the core drive (control, strength) is the same.

What Enneagram types are most common?

Research suggests Types 6, 9 and 3 are the most common, while Types 4 and 5 are among the rarest. However, frequency varies significantly by culture, gender and context. Online self-selection also skews results — introspective people who seek out personality tests tend to over-represent 4 and 5.
